Welcome to my world

It's so strange that I should miss work on such a beautiful day. Yesterday (Friday) was bright and beautiful and sunny, yet I was stuck on my little island, unable to go to work. For anyone who doesn't already know, I live IN Newfoundland, but technically, not ON it...we actually live on an island off of NFLD. So when people come to visit, they have to take not just ONE (no, that would be too easy), but TWO ferries to get to our home (these people must love us ALOT!)

As this is only our second winter in NFLD, I was unprepared for "The Ice". To make a long story short, a ridiculous amount of ice has moved into the bay between us and the rest of our province, so thick that the ferry is not able to make it's regular daily runs. So yesterday, I had to call my employer and explain that, despite the beautiful weather, I was unable to come to work because "the icebergs are here". THERE'S a sentence not everyone gets to say!

My husband had the day off as well (he worked a night shift last night), so we got to go for a nice long walk with "Our Pretend Dog", who is, in fact, a dog, but is not technically "ours". As we were walking, I was thinking about the "ice situation", and how if I was an outsider looking in, I would think how ridiculous and annoying and unnecessary the situation was. I was thinking about how a lot of the things in life that we think would be overwhelming, or unmanagable, are sometimes a whole lot less scary, and more managable, when we're actually walking through them.

If someone had told me, 2 years ago, that on the weekend of April 3-5th, 2009, I would be living on a semi-isolated island, unable to leave because the only ferry was unable to make it through all the ice....HOLY COW! I would've said NO WAY! I am NOT living there. Well as it turns out its not so bad. A pain in the neck, maybe, but nothing more. All said and done, I got a relaxing day with my husband, and, if nothing more, "A good story to tell the grandkids!"
