The Best Part of My Day

Two days a week, I'm finished work at 1:00 pm. I travel home on my little ferry, change into
something comfy, make a cup of coffee, curl up on my Big Comfy Chair with my computer, and click
on this website.

It's quite possibly one of the best parts of my day. Now stop reading my boring words and CLICK
HERE!!! You can thank me later.

My Time-Traveling Husband

I'm reading the book "The Time Traveler's Wife", and one chapter starts with this:
"Here's a secret: sometimes, I like when Henry [the time travelling husband] is gone." She also says, at one point, that being married to a time-traveler is like being married to a policeman: you never know when he's leaving; where he is; how long he'll be gone; when he'll be back. There are missed birthday's and anniversaries, and when the wife on the movie announced to the husband that he had "missed Christmas", I had lovely flashbacks of last Christmas, sitting alone in my living room with the presents only half-opened, because my husband got called out while we were smack in the of present opening (although, in his defence, he didn't miss the WHOLE morning, and got to come back just in time to see me abandon my will to wait for him, and tear into a small, rectangle package that I just KNEW was Kenny & Dolly's Christmas CD!!!)
Back in the theatre, I turned to 2 of my friends (whose husbands are also officers) and said, "Oh! I get it! He's not actually a time-traveler; he's just a policeman!"

I think it's clear that usually, I don't like all the "being-left-alone"...but in an effort to be more positive, I've been thinking up things I DO like about being alone.

1) I like having the remote. I like being able to pick a show that only I want to watch, without feeling bad that Jamie doesn't like the show.

2) I like putting all the pillows in their proper places on the sofa's and chair, and knowing that no one is going to move them or put them on the floor.

3) I like having the curtains and blinds in the living room open. For some reason unbeknownst to me, Jamie "needs" the curtains shut, even on sunny days. Actually, maybe it's because you can see the tv better that way. But if it's sunny, there is not even a CHANCE the curtains in staying shut in my house.

4) Sometimes, I like being super lazy, and wearing sweats ALL day, and sitting on the couch and watching TV for hours on end. And I prefer being alone when I do this, so that there's no one (besides me) to see me being a sloth :)

5) I love being able to have the house completely clean, and then turn off the computer and TV and have complete silence, and then curl up on my cozy chair with coffee and a book and my blanket, because everyone knows reading is so much better if you have silence.

6) When I'm alone, I'm more likely to do things. I hate going to work out, or going walking, or going to get groceries when Jamie's at home, because sometimes we get so little time together that I feel like if he's off duty, we should be together. So when he's working, I feel more free to get out of the house.

I'm reading number 6 and I'm not sure if it makes sense, but I don't know how else to word it.

Of course, being alone would still be much better with a dog. I'm working on it :)

I'm Dating Myself

A conversation regarding the movie currently out in theatres, My Sister's Keeper:

Me: "So...can we go see it this weekend while in town?"

Jamie: "Well, does anything blow up in the movie?"

Me: "Well...probably not...it's about a girl with leukemia, and her mother is trying to force her sister to-"

Jamie: "Sounds BORRRRRING. I'm not going."

Me: "Ok, what about I Love You Beth Cooper? It looks funny."

Jamie: "Do things explode in that one?"

And so on so forth.

So yesterday evening, while Jamie went on a motorcycle course, I decided to date myself. I went to the movies.
A little list of nice things about taking yourself on a date:
-> It's cheaper
-> You get to make all the decisions yourself
-> When the theatre is super-packed, it's way easier to find a good seat for ONE rather than for TWO...AND you don't have to annoy people looking for seats with, "Sorry, this seat (with my purse and jacket on it) is, in fact, taken. My husband's out getting the snacks/peeing/trying to find an escape route so he can skip the chick flick I've dragged him to.

The down side? When you're all alone, without a boy, people will talk to you. Here's a really "fun" conversation I had the pleasure of experiencing yesterday, when I was minus one husband at the mall:

Random Man: [Handing me a flyer to "Ladies night at (insert club name here)] "Hey. Big party night tonight. Defininately stop in."

Me: [Not wanting to appear rude by giving him back the flyer] "Oh...ok. Thank you."

Random Man: "So...do you think you'll come?"

Me: "Umm No. I'm not big on clubs. And I don't drink."

Random Man: [LOOOOONG pause] "You don't drink...like...you mean...this weekend?

Me: "No, I mean at all."

Random Man: "So like...you only drink...now and then?"

Me: [Feeling like talking to this guy is about as stimulating as talking to a sandwich] "I don't drink at all. On any days. Any alcohol. Ever."

Random Man: [Looking at me like I'm growing a second head] "Ok...well...um...well..." And literally just turns and walks away.

I loved the reaction. It was as though he was scared if he spoke to me for any longer, my lack-of-interest in alcohol or clubbing might just rub off on him. Ha!

Point in case, I had a much better night taking myself on a movie date. DO it sometime; it's FUN!

And today, if I can remember how to get there from here, I'm going on a "Downtown St. John's Shopping Expedition." Just me. I'm crossing my fingers that I can remember how to parallel park.

BEST!! (Sweep Me Away- by Kari Jobe)

Father, I love Your ways
You came in Your mercy and died in my place
All I can do is bow
Because of Your goodness and Your sovereign grace

That You sweep me away, sweep me away in Your love
Where nothing else matters
Sweep me away, sweep me away in Your love
Where nothing else matters

Tears rolling down my face
Because of Your love
and Your sweet embrace
The peace that just overflows
It's here that I know You have been waiting to

Sweep me away, sweep me away in Your love
Where nothing else matters
Sweep me away, sweep me away in Your love
Where nothing else matters

Your grace, it covers me
Your love, it covers me
Oh God, You cover me

Your grace, it covers me
Your love, it covers me
Oh God, You cover me

Goodbye, precious time...

So here's what I've been thinking. Basically every single day, I spend:
30 minutes waiting for the ferry to the "mainland";
20 minutes ON the ferry to the "mainland";
45 minutes waiting for the ferry back to Bell Island
20 minutes ON the ferry back to Bell Island.

Every work day/sunday (going to church), I spend approximately 2 hours on that dumb ol' boat. That equals 12 hours a week, which means in one year, I've wasted (give or take) 500 hours of my life! That's 500 hours I will NEVER get back! And, I'm here for 3 years! Yikes.
So then I started thinking about all the things I could do with 1500 hours. And I figured that in the 3 years I spend here, I could have:

Made 1500 Apple PB crisp pies;
Memorized the whole Old Testament;
Painted my house red, and then black, and then white. One hundred times.
Made.... many, many, pots of rice.
Earned my Master's degree
Learned how to do math.

I. Am missing out. On so much.

I need thoughts and ideas on how to fill up my waiting. With something of medium importance, somewhere between the pots of rice and the Master's.

A lazy Sunday...

I sort of have a dog.

Riley belongs to one of Jamie's co-workers, who was injured on the job back in January, and is currently in NB, recuperating. So, seeing as how I was in love with his dog and so lonely most off the time, he gave me Riley until he returns (which might only be at the end of this year). I'm completely ok with this! The only person not benefiting from either end of this win-win situation is Jamie...seeing as how he's going to have to buy me a dog when Riley returns to his real family!

Holy COW it's nice having a dog in the house! I feel so much safer with Riley here...especially since he wants make chew toys out of anyone who so much as walk through our front yard! He actually is super gentle, and a real cuddler...but only if he knows I'm relaxed with the person. I love this dog. And life's not so bad for him, either...

For instance...

I left for church at 8:30 am...Jamie was home in bed. Jamie then gets ready and leaves for work at 12:50 pm, just as I'm walking back in the door. The pup usually has someone home with him. And because of this somewhat spoiled situation, puppy has developed some funny new habits that I'm not so sure his real owner is going to like...:)

Like jumping on top of my head to give me kisses when I bend over to pick my purse...or shoes...or anything at all...off the floor.

Like being so attached to Jamie that when Jamie gets home from work he jumps in circles until he pees on the floor, and then we growl him and he goes and lays on his bed.

Like being so attached to Jamie that when Jamie leaves for work, he jumps up at each and every window and door in the house to try and catch one last glimpse of him.

Like being so attached to Jamie that if a door is opened while Jamie's at work, he'll take off and run all the way to the RCMP detachment's back door, and then sit and wait in front of it.

We might be in trouble when his owner gets back :)

Jamie...start looking into breeders. We're getting a puppy.

Welcome to my world

It's so strange that I should miss work on such a beautiful day. Yesterday (Friday) was bright and beautiful and sunny, yet I was stuck on my little island, unable to go to work. For anyone who doesn't already know, I live IN Newfoundland, but technically, not ON it...we actually live on an island off of NFLD. So when people come to visit, they have to take not just ONE (no, that would be too easy), but TWO ferries to get to our home (these people must love us ALOT!)

As this is only our second winter in NFLD, I was unprepared for "The Ice". To make a long story short, a ridiculous amount of ice has moved into the bay between us and the rest of our province, so thick that the ferry is not able to make it's regular daily runs. So yesterday, I had to call my employer and explain that, despite the beautiful weather, I was unable to come to work because "the icebergs are here". THERE'S a sentence not everyone gets to say!

My husband had the day off as well (he worked a night shift last night), so we got to go for a nice long walk with "Our Pretend Dog", who is, in fact, a dog, but is not technically "ours". As we were walking, I was thinking about the "ice situation", and how if I was an outsider looking in, I would think how ridiculous and annoying and unnecessary the situation was. I was thinking about how a lot of the things in life that we think would be overwhelming, or unmanagable, are sometimes a whole lot less scary, and more managable, when we're actually walking through them.

If someone had told me, 2 years ago, that on the weekend of April 3-5th, 2009, I would be living on a semi-isolated island, unable to leave because the only ferry was unable to make it through all the ice....HOLY COW! I would've said NO WAY! I am NOT living there. Well as it turns out its not so bad. A pain in the neck, maybe, but nothing more. All said and done, I got a relaxing day with my husband, and, if nothing more, "A good story to tell the grandkids!"
